Our History

Aelwyd means ‘hearth’ in the Welsh language. We are a housing association, with a Christian ethos.

We were formed as a partnership between the Baptist Housing Association (BHA), Presbyterian Church of Wales, and United Reformed Church (Wales Province).  The BHA had been founded to provide homes for retired members of the clergy, but over time Aelwyd Housing has grown to provide homes for people in housing need.

Like other housing associations in Wales, we are regulated by the Welsh Government, and came under Welsh Government regulation in 2017. Since then we have achieved the highest regulation rating possible.

In 2022 we began growing again for the first time in many years by increasing the number of homes we own. We also provide  management services to charitable housing organisations in Cardiff and Porthcawl.
